ALEA STATE TROOPERS INVESTIGATE 19 TRAFFIC FATALITIES DURING THE

During the holiday enforcement period, which ran from 12:01 a.m. Dec. 19, 2014, to midnight Jan. 2, 2015, the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA) State Troopers investigated 19 traffic deaths across the state. The deadly crashes occurred in Cullman, Talladega, Marengo, Shelby, Coosa, Conecuh, Houston, Randolph, Limestone, Macon, Walker, Bullock and Barbour counties. Fatalities included 15 drivers, two adult pedestrians, a three-year-old passenger and an unrestrained two-month-old passenger. Only seven of the individuals were using seat belts. Preliminary investigations indicate alcohol may have been a factor in at least three of the fatal incidents. During the 2013 holiday period, Dec. 20, 2013, to Jan. 2, 2014, 17 individuals were killed. Alcohol was a factor in five of those crashes and only four of the individuals were wearing seatbelts. ALEA State Troopers encourage the motoring public to continue to obey all traffic laws and make safety a priority -- particularly when temperatures dip below freezing and ice may be present on roadways. -30- The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA) was created by Act 2013-67 and represents the consolidation and realignment of 12 state law enforcement agencies/functions into one entity. ALEA is responsible for the functions and missions of the Alabama Department of Homeland Security, Department of Public Safety, Alabama Bureau of Investigation, Fusion Center, Criminal Justice Information Center, Marine Police, Alcoholic Beverage Control Board Enforcement, Department of Revenue Enforcement, Forestry Commission Investigations, Agricultural and Industry Investigations, Public Service Commission Enforcement, and Office of Prosecution Service Computer Forensics Lab.
