General W.K. Wilson Jr. Bridge Repair Update
McInnis Construction awarded $2.3 million contract
MOBILE – Beginning this Sunday, June 15, the southbound portion of the I-65 General W.K. Wilson Jr. Bridge will be reduced to one lane as crews install temporary barrier rail in preparation for northbound bridge repairs.
Northbound traffic will be shifted to the southbound bridge on June 20 to facilitate one lane of traffic in each direction as the northbound bridge is closed to traffic during repair work.
On May 22 an accident involving two tractor-trailers caused a fire that burned for several hours on the Middle River crossing of the northbound section of the General W.K. Wilson Jr. Bridge. The fire caused severe damage to the bridge deck as well as the steel girder at the accident site.
The Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT) awarded the repair contract to McInnis Construction, LLC after certifying its $2.3 million bid was the lowest that met project requirements. The scope of work includes replacing 250 feet of bridge deck and heat straightening approximately 50 feet of the girder that was damaged in the fire.
The contract is 25 calendar days and includes incentive/disincentive special provisions in order to facilitate completing the project as quickly as possible.
