Montgomery, Ala. – Tod Beers, Math Coordinator for the Alabama Math, Science and Technology Initiative (AMSTI), is the Alabama Department of Education’s Employee of the Quarter for July-September 2011. Beers joined the department in December 2002.
State Superintendent Dr. Joe Morton, Deputy State Superintendent Dr. Eddie Johnson, members of the Employee Recognition Board, and AMSTI co-workers surprised Beers with an engraved plaque, a subscription to Outdoor Alabama magazine and lunch gift certificates. He was honored with a resolution at the July 12 annual meeting of the State Board of Education.
As AMSTI’s Math Coordinator, Beers’ duties include working with eight SDE staff and through 11 AMSTI sites and 50 local math specialists to provide training, resources and on-site support for approximately half of the schools in the state. Most recently, he has been working on several collaborative projects in the Office of Student Learning where AMSTI, the Alabama Reading Initiative, Assessment and Accountability, and Curriculum and Instruction are working jointly to provide professional development across the state.
Beers earned B.S. degrees from the University of Montevallo and the University of Alabama in Birmingham (UAB) and a Master of Arts in Education from UAB. In May, UAB awarded Beers the Outstanding Alumnus Award for Secondary Education for the 2010-2011 academic year. Before joining the department, he taught for 12 ½ years at Ensley High School in Birmingham.
Beers lives in Deatsville with his wife Stephanie of 24 years, and two daughters – Shannon (13) and Rachel (12). They attend East Memorial Baptist Church in Prattville.
The Barbara Fannin Memorial Employee of the Quarter award recognizes staff members who have demonstrated outstanding work ethics and dedication to assist fellow employees, local school personnel, and the general public. Candidates are nominated for the award by their colleagues. Members of the department’s Employee Recognition Board, who are nominated and elected by fellow employees, review all nominations and make the final selection each quarter. The quarterly award is named in honor of the late Barbara Fannin, a recipient of the award.
