Montgomery, Ala. – At its mandatory annual K-12 meeting today, the Alabama State Board of Education elected Randy McKinney to his third term as Vice President, and Dr. Mary Jane Caylor to a third term as President Pro Tem.
McKinney, who represents District 1, presides in the event the governor, who serves as president, is absent. McKinney was first appointed to the board by Gov. Bob Riley in September of 2003 and was elected to his first full term in 2004. His current term expires in 2013. He served as President Pro Tem from July 2005 to July 2008. He completed his B.S. at the University of South Alabama, graduated from the New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary with a Master of Religious Education degree, and earned his J.D. from Birmingham School of Law. He is a former assistant district attorney for the state of Alabama in the 28th Judicial Circuit of Baldwin County. He is a Certified Real Estate Broker (CRB) and Certified Commercial Investment Member (CCIM). McKinney serves on Common Ground: Education and the Military Meeting the Needs of Students, a national task force of the National Association of State Boards of Education (NASBE). The Orange Beach realtor is a member, deacon and trustee of First Baptist Church of Gulf Shores.
“Both Mr. McKinney and Dr. Caylor are outstanding leaders on this board,” said State Superintendent of Education Dr. Joe Morton, who serves as board secretary. “They are strong advocates for public education and are dedicated to improving the lives of Alabama’s schoolchildren.”
Dr. Caylor, who represents District 8, presides over state school board meetings in the event both the governor and McKinney are absent. Caylor, former superintendent of the Huntsville City Schools, is serving her fourth term representing District 8. She earned her bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees from The University of Alabama. She is a charter member and past board member of Leadership Alabama Inc., and an alumna of the first class of Leadership Alabama. Caylor established the Huntsville City Schools Foundation, was selected Superintendent of the Year by the Alabama Council of PTAs, and was selected Alabama finalist for Superintendent of the Year by the American Association of School Administrators. She holds an Alabama PTA Honorary Life Membership and is a member of Church of Nativity in Huntsville.
