Montgomery, AL – Alabama’s active and retired teachers and educational support professionals will be honored with the Medal of Distinction during a live statewide television broadcast of the Alabama Sports Festival State Games XXVIII Opening Ceremonies, June 18, 2010, at 7 p.m. at the Birmingham-Jefferson Civic Center.
The Alabama Legislature passed a joint resolution, signed by Gov. Bob Riley, declaring Alabama Teachers and Educational Support Personnel Day on June 18, 2010. This date coincides with the Alabama Sports Festival Opening Ceremonies, during which Honoring our Heroes will recognize the commitment and dedication of Alabama’s teachers and support personnel.
“Dedication, commitment, nurturing and hero – all words that describe our great teachers and school support personnel,” said Ron Creel, President/CEO of the Alabama Sports Festival. “Their dedication to our children, their commitment to changing lives, and their nurturing relationships with students, families and the community all describe why they are outstanding heroes. One day at a time, these individuals help to develop the dynamic building blocks that will be carried with a student throughout his or her life. Their talents in the classroom help to develop the environment necessary for our Alabama children to maximize their fullest potential. Because of their tireless efforts in and out of the classroom, we honor these heroes for making a difference, one student at a time.”
The Honoring our Heroes Medal of Distinction will be awarded to active and retired educators who register and are present on June 18. K-12 and college teachers, support personnel, administrators and board members with a minimum of 10 years of combined service in Alabama public, private, Christian, or home school programs are eligible for the Medal of Distinction, which is designed and minted exclusively for this special ceremony.
In order to receive the Medal of Distinction, the qualifying educator must register before June 1, 2010, and be present at the Alabama Sports Festival Opening Ceremonies on June 18.
