Montgomery, Ala. — It is down to the final four candidates in the running for the 2010-2011 Alabama Teacher of the Year. The finalists are:
· Cathy Coleman Bennett, Geneva High School, Geneva City Schools
· Nancy B. Caffee, Cleveland High School, Blount County Schools
· Tammy Morton, Skyland Elementary School, Tuscaloosa City Schools
· Phil Rodney Wilson, Ogletree Elementary School, Auburn City Schools
“These outstanding teachers deserve great recognition and congratulations. It will be a challenge for the state judging committee to choose the 2010 Teacher of the Year from this group of innovative and enthusiastic educators,” said State Superintendent of Education Joe Morton.” The next step for the final four is an extensive interview with the state judging committee, followed by the live broadcast awards ceremony, The 2010 Alabama Stars in Education, on Wednesday, May 12.
The 2010 Alabama Stars in Education event is hosted by the Alabama Department of Education and Alabama Public Television (APT). The event will be held at Frazier United Methodist Church in Montgomery. The live broadcast will air from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. on local APT stations. The 2010-2011 Alabama Teacher of the Year will be announced at the ceremony. The event will also feature APT’s Young Heroes Awards.
APT’s Young Heroes Awards are given to five outstanding young people who have demonstrated courage, determination, volunteerism, and academic excellence. Alabama’s Teacher of the Year spends the majority of the school year serving as the spokesperson for education and the teaching profession as well as presenting workshops to various groups. Additionally, Alabama’s representative is a candidate for the National Teacher of the Year Award.
