Montgomery, Ala. — The “sweet 16” have been selected after over 132 teachers submitted applications, vying to be Alabama’s 2010-2011 Teacher of the Year. The final four will be selected soon and the Teacher of Year will be named at a presentation on May 12.
“These teachers are not only role models for the students of Alabama, but for their peers as well. Their hard work, innovation and compassion are seen in the accomplishments of their students. We are honored to have teachers of this caliber working in our schools statewide,” said Dr. Joseph Morton, State Superintendent of Education.
Alabama’s Teacher of the Year spends the majority of the school year serving as the spokesperson for education and the teaching profession as well as presenting workshops to various groups. Additionally, Alabama’s representative is a candidate for the National Teacher of the Year.
Speaking on her experiences as a previous finalist and as Alabama’s current Teacher of the Year, Yung Bui-Kincer of Booker T. Washington Magnet School said, “I am honored to have had this opportunity to be an educational ambassador for the state of Alabama. Despite the tough times ahead for education, I have seen the dedication, devotion, and determination of fellow teachers in their endeavor to educate our children. It has been and will continue to be my humble honor to speak on behalf of education and the role that education has on shaping our children and our community.”
An elementary and secondary teacher was named from each of the eight state Board of Education districts in mid-February. A member of the state Board of Education, the local board of education, a local superintendent or representative, the current district Teachers of the Year, and a representative from higher education served as committee members in selecting nominees.
