Montgomery, AL – The President’s Council on Physical Fitness and Sports (PCPFS) has designated two Alabama public schools as PCPFS State Champions:
1. Monte Sano Elementary School, Huntsville City School System
2. Crestline Elementary School, Mountain Brook City School System
The PCPFS State Champion award is presented annually to schools with the highest number of students scoring at or above the 85th percentile on the President’s Challenge Physical Fitness Test, given in the spring of 2009. The state champions program rewards the top schools in each state based on their enrollment.
PCPFS State Champion Schools receive a distinctive award certificate as well as state and national recognition for their physical fitness achievement. Students who score at or above the 85th percentile in all five components of the President’s Challenge receive an embroidered State Champion emblem and a certificate.
The five assessments of the President’s Challenge Physical Fitness Test measure four components of physical fitness:
1. One-mile run/walk for heart and lung endurance
2. Curl-ups for abdominal strength and endurance
3. “Sit and reach” stretch for muscular flexibility
4. Pull-ups for upper body strength and endurance
5. Shuttle run for agility
Instructors are encouraged to design units so children can gradually improve their physical fitness levels to meet those outlined by the President’s Challenge program.
