Montgomery, Ala. – Twenty-eight Alabama public school students are National Achievement Scholarship Semifinalists in the 2010 competition, the National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC) announced today.
Alabama’s students are among 1,600 Semifinalists in the 46th annual National Achievement Scholarship Program for scholastically talented Black American high school seniors. Semifinalists are eligible to compete for approximately 800 Achievement Scholarships worth some $2.6 million.
Two types of National Achievement Scholarships will be announced on April 7, 2010:
1. Every Finalist will compete for one of 700 one-time National Achievement $2500 Scholarships.
2. Corporate and business sponsors will underwrite about 100 Achievement Scholarships for Finalists who meet sponsors’ criteria.
To be considered for Achievement Scholarships, Semifinalists must meet Finalist requirements:
· A record of high academic performance throughout high school
· Endorsement by high school principal
· Essay
· Earned SAT scores that confirm PSAT/NMSQT performance
Alabama’s Semifinalists were selected from more than 160,000 high school juniors nationwide when they took the 2008 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT).
Conducted by the NMSC, the National Achievement Program is a privately financed, academic competition that operates without government assistance. Since its inception in 1964 to recognize academically promising Black students nationwide, the program has awarded $94 million to more than 29,500 students.
