Montgomery, Ala. – Are you the most committed student volunteer at your school? Do you know outstanding students who volunteer in their schools and communities? They could be the top student volunteers in Alabama and the United States for 2010.
The 15th annual Prudential Spirit of Community Awards will honor students in Grades 5-12 who exemplify community spirit for outstanding acts of volunteerism. The 2010 application is available online. Application deadline is Nov. 2, 2009.
In February 2010, Alabama’s top two candidates – one middle and one high school student – will be named State Honorees. Each State Honoree receives a $1,000 cash award, an engraved silver medallion, and an all-expense-paid trip to Washington, DC, with a parent or guardian for four days of recognition events in May 2010. Distinguished Finalists (from 2 to 10 state runners-up) receive engraved bronze medallions.
State Honorees are eligible to become one of 10 National Honorees, who receive additional awards of $5,000, engraved gold medallions, crystal trophies for their schools or organizations, and $5,000 grants from The Prudential Foundation for the nonprofit, charitable organizations of their choice.
Local Honorees receive Certificates of Achievement. Local Honorees with the qualifying number of volunteer hours receive The President’s Volunteer Service Award. This award recognizes volunteers who have achieved a certain standard – measured by the number of service hours over a 12-month period or cumulative hours earned over a lifetime.
The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards program is sponsored by Prudential Financial in partnership with the National Association of Secondary School Principals. The nation’s largest youth recognition program based exclusively on volunteer community service has honored over 90,000 students since 1995.
