MONTGOMERY— Grants totaling $39,368 awarded by Gov. Robert Bentley are assisting workers at plants in Montgomery and Pike counties with skills training.
Dow Corning Alabama expects to boost productivity at its plant in the Mt. Meigs community by using the $30,000 award to teach new skills to 31 workers at the facility. Calhoun Community College will provide the training on-site over a 12-month period. Dow Corning is a manufacturer of silicon metal and is based in Midland, Michigan. The company is contributing $68,086 in matching funds.
A $9,368 grant to Cox Container of Pike County will help train 23 workers at its Troy location in methods to increase efficiency, productivity and make the business more competitive. Paulson Training Programs will conduct the training on-site over seven months. Company officials say the training will increase the workers’ earning potential at the plant, which makes a variety of plastic containers. Cox is providing $9,368 in matching funds.
“Helping these workers increase their skill sets will create a better, more efficient workforce for these companies while highlighting the capability of Alabama’s workers to continually upgrade skills and excel in their careers,” Bentley said.
The Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs is administering the grant from funds made available by the U. S. Department of Labor. ADECA manages a wide range of programs that support law enforcement, economic development, infrastructure upgrades, recreation, energy conservation, water resources, job training and career development.
Bentley notified Morris Alford of Dow Corning Alabama and Gary Fox of Cox Container that the grants had been approved.
