Gov. Robert Bentley has awarded $4,092 to provide Tallassee police with additional equipment to help officers maintain the peace and protect residents.

The Tallassee Police Department will use the funds to purchase electronic control devices or Tasers. An ECD is a non-lethal weapon used to temporarily incapacitate persons long enough for them to be subdued.

The grant will ensure that every officer on the force is equipped with an ECD.

Bentley notified Mayor Bobby Payne that the funding had been approved.

The Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs is administering the grant with funds provided by the U.S. Department of Justice. ADECA manages a wide range of programs that support law enforcement and public safety, economic development, workforce development, recreation, energy conservation and water resource management.
