MONTGOMERY— Gov. Robert Bentley has awarded a $38,758 grant to aid a program that works on behalf of victims of domestic violence in Marion and Winston counties.
The grant to the Marion County Commission will support the Marion County Domestic Violence Recovery Program, which investigates and prosecutes domestic violence cases in both counties.
A full-time investigator and two part-time prosecutors work as part of the unit. The unit also connects victims with other local resources that can help them recover from abuse and start rebuilding their lives.
“Recovering from the trauma of domestic abuse is more difficult without professional assistance,” Bentley said. “I commend the recovery program staff for their dedicated efforts to assist victims and seek justice.”
The Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs is administering the grant from funds made available by the U.S. Department of Justice. ADECA manages a wide range of programs that support law enforcement, economic development, infrastructure upgrades, recreation, energy conservation, water resources, job training and career development.
Bentley notified Eddie Byrd, chairman of the Marion County Commission, that the grant had been approved. Matching funds of $12,919 will supplement the award.
