MONTGOMERY— Gov. Robert Bentley has awarded a $9,919 grant to the Sumter County Commission to purchase needed equipment for the Sheriff’s Department.
The Sheriff’s Department will obtain new bulletproof vests, tasers and body cameras to provide an extra measure of protection for its four full-time and two part-time deputies who patrol an area of about 903 square miles and protect a population of about 15,000 residents.
The Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs is administering the grant from funds made available by the U.S. Department of Justice. ADECA manages a wide range of programs that support law enforcement, economic development, infrastructure upgrades, recreation, energy conservation, water resources, job training and career development.
Bentley notified Tommie Armstead, County Commission chairman, that the grant had been approved.
