MONTGOMERY— Gov. Robert Bentley has awarded grants totaling $19,253 to help the Bullock County Commission and city of Union Springs to purchase needed law enforcement equipment.

County and city officials say the equipment will help them to better serve residents and provide additional protection for officers and deputies.

The Sheriff’s Department will use a $9,253 grant for new bulletproof vests, tasers, digital cameras and body cameras.

A $10,000 grant will enable the Union Springs Police Department to purchase new tasers and related accessories like holsters and cartridges.

The Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs is administering the grants from funds made available by the U.S. Department of Justice. ADECA manages a wide range of programs that support law enforcement, economic development, infrastructure upgrades, recreation, energy conservation, water resources, job training and career development.

Bentley notified Union Springs Mayor Saint T. Thomas and Ronald Smith, Bullock County Commission chairman, that the grants had been approved.
