Gov. Robert Bentley has announced a $50,000 grant to expand recreational opportunities in the town of Vernon.
The Land and Water Conservation Fund grant will enable the town to construct an outdoor water feature at its park.
“This project will encourage families in Vernon to enjoy the outdoors and take advantage of their public park,” Bentley said. “In addition to the fresh air and exercise, parks provide residents a place to interact, socialize and strengthen community ties.”
The 1,800-square-foot “splash pad” will include 10 water features and will be accessible to persons with handicaps. The city plans to construct the new feature near the park entrance and a walking trail.
Bentley notified Mayor Glenn Crawford that the grant had been approved. The city, with assistance from local organizations, has pledged $58,000 in labor and in-kind materials for the project. LWCF grants require a 50 percent local match of funds or in-kind services and supplies.
Congress created the LWCF program in 1964 to assist states with the development and preservation of outdoor recreational facilities. The Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs administers LWCF grants on behalf of the governor.
ADECA manages a wide range of programs that support law enforcement, economic development, workforce development, recreation, energy conservation and water resource management.
