MONTGOMERY— Gov. Robert Bentley has announced a $48,500 Land and Water Conservation Fund grant to add a kayak and canoe launch and related features to Walter Cofield Park in Saraland.
The city will construct a boardwalk that will lead to a launching point, providing paddlers with convenient access to Norton Creek.
City officials said the launch is needed to respond to popular demand from those who want access so they can explore delta waterways, get exercise and fish. The city of Saraland is contributing $59,650 to the project.
“Paddling is becoming a popular way to explore and enjoy Alabama’s scenic outdoors,” Bentley said. “I am pleased to assist local leaders working to make it easier for residents and visitors to explore our waterways.”
Congress created the LWCF program in 1964 to assist states with the development and preservation of outdoor recreational facilities.
The Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs is administering the grant. ADECA administers an array of programs that support law enforcement and traffic safety, economic development, energy conservation, workforce development, water resource management and recreation development.
Bentley notified Saraland Mayor Howard Rubenstein that the grant had been approved.
