A $34,000 grant announced by Gov. Robert Bentley will put the play back in a Clanton playground.
The Land and Water Conservation Fund grant will help renovate a worn playground at West End Park, allowing the city to install equipment that is more modern and safer for children to use.
Clanton built the 11-acre park with LWCF assistance in 1979 to include a playground, ball fields, basketball courts, picnic areas and a swimming pool (renovated in 2002 with LWCF grant support).
“Our parks should be havens where families and communities gather, interact and enjoy the outdoors,” Bentley said. “This grant will help Clanton restore a vital component needed to make their park complete once again.”
Bentley notified Mayor Billy Joe Driver that the grant had been approved. The city is supplying $34,000 for the playground renovation. LWCF grants require a 50 percent local match of funds or in-kind materials and services.
Congress created the LWCF program in 1964 to assist states with the development and preservation of outdoor recreational facilities. The Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs is administering the grant.
ADECA manages a wide range of programs that support law enforcement, economic development, workforce development, recreation, energy conservation and water resource management.
