MONTGOMERY— Gov. Robert Bentley has announced a Land and Water Conservation Fund grant to renovate the playground at E.L. Turner Park in Luverne.
The city is receiving $50,000 to remove old playground equipment and replace it with updated versions that are much safer and accessible to children with disabilities. The city also will update landscaping, install safety fencing and add benches.
“Public parks give residents a convenient place to enjoy the outdoors,” Bentley said. “This new playground equipment at Turner Park will offer more families in Luverne an opportunity to get outside, spend time together and have fun.”
City officials say the old playground equipment installed in 1977 is no longer safe. The new equipment is sturdier and expected to last much longer. The city is contributing $60,000 toward the project.
Congress created the LWCF program in 1964 to assist states with the development and preservation of outdoor recreational facilities. The Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs manages LWCF grants on behalf of the governor.
ADECA administers an array of programs that support law enforcement and traffic safety, economic development, energy conservation, workforce development, water resource management and recreation development.
Bentley notified Luverne Mayor Joe Sport that the grant had been approved.
