A $59,471 grant awarded by Gov. Robert Bentley will help a Chambers County task force to reduce illegal drug use in the county by arresting those who buy or sell illegal drugs or falsely obtain prescription drugs.
The Fifth Judicial Circuit Drug Task Force, a multi-jurisdictional agency, works to curtail trafficking and use of illegal drugs like methamphetamine, cocaine and heroin and to ensure that prescribed drugs are used by intended patients and kept off the streets.
The force is made up of representatives from the Chambers County Sheriff’s Department, the District Attorney’s office and police departments in LaFayette, Lanett and Valley.
By combining resources within the county and working with law enforcement officers from neighboring jurisdictions as well as state and federal agencies, the task force is able to have a greater impact on stopping the flow of illegal drugs.
Bentley notified Henry Osborne, chairman of the Chambers County Commission, that the grant had been approved. The County Commission serves as the fiscal agent for the funding.
The Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs is administering the grant with funds provided by the U.S. Department of Justice. ADECA manages a wide range of programs that support law enforcement and public safety, economic development, workforce development, recreation, energy conservation and water resource management.
