MONTGOMERY— Gov. Robert Bentley has awarded three grants totaling $190,690 to help a nonprofit organization continue providing professional assistance for domestic abuse victims in nine west Alabama counties.
Tuscaloosa-based Turning Point offers emergency shelter, a 24-hour crisis hotline, individual and group counseling, education outreach and other assistance to victims in Bibb, Fayette, Greene, Hale, Lamar, Marengo, Pickens, Sumter and Tuscaloosa counties.
The Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs is administering the grants from funds made available by the U.S. Department of Justice. ADECA administers a wide range of programs that support law enforcement, economic development, infrastructure upgrades, recreation, energy conservation, water resource management, job training and career development.
Bentley informed Chuck Bracknell, president of Turning Point’s board, that the grants had been approved. Matching funds of $47,672 will supplement the grants.
In addition to grants, Turning Point depends on private donations to ensure all services remain available to victims.
