MONTGOMERY – Gov. Robert Bentley has awarded two grants to help victims of domestic violence and sexual assault in seven south-central Alabama counties.
Grants totaling $679,883 were awarded to the Family Sunshine Center, which assists victims in Autauga, Butler, Chilton, Crenshaw, Elmore, Lowndes and Montgomery counties. The center provides crisis intervention, emergency shelter, counseling, advocacy and other support services to victims.
“Professional, compassionate help is available around the clock for victims of these terrible crimes,” said Bentley. “I commend the Family Sunshine Center’s staff for their commitment to serving those in need.”
The Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs is administering the grants from funds made available to the state by the U.S. departments of Justice and Health and Human Services. ADECA administers a wide range of programs that support law enforcement, workforce development, energy conservation, economic development, water resource management and recreation.
Along with grant funding, the center relies on private donations to ensure the continuation of free services to victims.
Bentley notified Andrea McCain, president of the center’s board of directors, that the grants had been approved.
