MONTGOMERY— Gov. Robert Bentley has awarded two grants totaling $263,505 to help ensure free professional assistance is available to domestic violence victims in Mobile and Washington counties.
The grants will help Penelope House Family Violence Center continue offering safe shelter and an advocacy program for victims.
Through its Victims’ Assistance Program, Penelope House provides emergency shelter, a 24-hour crisis hotline, counseling, and support groups to help victims as they escape abusive situations.
The organization’s Court Advocacy program is available to help victims understand their legal rights. An advocate accompanies victims to court to provide support and guidance during legal proceedings.
Penelope House has helped thousands of victims since 1979. In addition to grant funds, the center depends on private donations to ensure a full range of assistance remains available to victims.
The Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs is administering the grants from funds made available by the U.S. Justice Department. ADECA manages an array of programs supporting law enforcement and traffic safety, economic development, energy conservation, workforce development, water resource management and recreation development.
Bentley notified Toni Ann Coumanis Torrans that the grants had been approved. Matching funds of $65,876 will supplement the awards.
