MONTGOMERY— Visitors to Daphne’s Village Point Park Preserve soon will have new paths to explore thanks in part to an $88,623 grant awarded by Gov. Robert Bentley.
The city of Daphne will add 800 feet of boardwalk and 470 feet of concrete trail in the nature preserve which is located along the shore of Mobile Bay and includes both wetlands and woodlands. The new boardwalk and trail will connect with existing paths and take visitors further inland to explore the preserve’s swamps. The boardwalk and trail will be fully accessible to people with disabilities.
“The coastal area of Baldwin County is one of Alabama’s greatest natural treasures,” Bentley said. “Completing this trail project will make this area more accessible and enjoyable for visitors and residents.”
The Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs is administering the grant with funds from the Federal Highway Administration’s Recreational Trails Program. ADECA manages an array of programs supporting law enforcement and traffic safety, economic development, energy conservation, workforce development, water resource management and recreation development.
Bentley notified Mayor Dane Haygood that the grant had been approved. The city is contributing $22,155 in matching funds toward the project.
