Governor Bentley awards funding to help create jobs in Headland

Things are about to get a little stickier in southeast Alabama, but that is good news.

Gov. Robert Bentley has awarded an $83,264 Community Development Block Grant to assist the expansion of Todd Syrup Farm and Country Market near Headland. The family-owned business, located off U.S. 431, produces and sells cane syrups, jams, jellies, sauces and seasonal produce.

The owners will expand the availability of locally produced goods and services and they plan several family attractions to encourage longer stops at the business. The business expects to hire at least 15 additional workers.

“Although the Todd Syrup retail store has been in operation only a few years, the Todd family has been in the farming business in southeast Alabama since the early 1800s,” Bentley said. “Small businesses are the backbone of our economy. When Alabama small businesses are successful and grow, the benefit is great to families and communities. This grant will allow Todd Syrup the opportunity to further benefit the families and the community of Headland.”

CDBG funding will provide sewer services for the business by extending lines to connect with the Headland sewer system. Headland has pledged $20,816 in local funding for the project.

The retail expansion will include freshly milled grits and corn meal and on-site coffee bean roasting and grinding. The business also will add a farm animal exhibit and an expanded museum. A pavilion will be available for special events. In addition to sales at the store, Todd Syrup also markets its products through a website.

Bentley notified Headland Mayor Ray Marler that the grant had been approved.
