MONTGOMERY – Gov. Robert Bentley awarded grants totaling $54,275 to help workers at two Bessemer companies increase their skills and gain certifications that will expand business opportunities.

A $29,150 grant to Deaver Industries Inc. will help cover training for 81 employees, and a $25,125 grant to Progressive Metal Finishers Inc. will help train 26 workers. Company officials say the training will help them better compete and make the businesses eligible to bid for contracts available only to companies with certification from the International Organization for Standardization.

“Providing Alabama workers with current training ensures they have the necessary skills to improve their careers and help their companies stay competitive, which helps retain and add jobs,” Bentley said.

Established in 1982, Deaver Industries produces reflectors used in industrial lighting, including LED, for commercial clients. Progressive Metal Finishers, established in 1998, handles precision painting and coating for commerical clients. The training is being conducted by Southeast Quality Management Systems on-site at the Progressive Metal Finishers facility. Deaver will contribute $151,898 and Progressive Metal Finishers $51,667 toward the training costs.

The Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs is administering the grants with funds from the federal Workforce Investment Act. ADECA manages a wide range of programs that support workforce development, law enforcement, economic development, energy conservation, water resource management and recreation.

Bentley notified Randy Rollins of Deaver Industries and Jason Turman of Progressive Metal Finishers that the grants had been approved.
