MONTGOMERY— The city of Union Springs will purchase Tasers for the police department with the help of a $1,672 grant awarded by Gov. Robert Bentley.
The Tasers will provide police officers with a non-lethal weapon to subdue uncooperative suspects who pose a threat to the officers and the public.
The Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs is administering the grant from funds made available by the U.S. Justice Department. ADECA administers an array of programs supporting law enforcement and traffic safety, economic development, energy efficiency, workforce development, water resource management and recreation development.
Bentley notified Mayor Saint Thomas that the grant had been approved.
