MONTGOMERY— Gov. Robert Bentley has awarded a $40,850 grant to continue a domestic violence prosecution unit in Mobile County.

The District Attorney’s Office is using grant funds to continue its Domestic Violence Initiative. Two assistant district attorneys oversee prosecution of all domestic violence cases in the county. The initiative also conducts educational sessions to teach law enforcement officers and other professionals about signs of domestic violence, understanding the cycle of violence, characteristics of offenders and how to ensure the safety and well-being of victims.

“Domestic violence has devastating and long-lasting effects on victims and those close to them,” Bentley said. “I commend Mobile County for this special initiative to prosecute abusers and help victims.”

The Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs is administering the grant from funds made available by the U.S. Department of Justice. ADECA administers a wide range of programs that support law enforcement, economic development, infrastructure upgrades, recreation, energy conservation, water resource management, job training and career development.

Bentley notified Merceria Ludgood, Mobile County Commission president, the grant had been approved. Local matching funds of $13,616 will supplement the grant.
