MONTGOMERY – Gov. Robert Bentley has awarded a $21,361 grant to support an organization that works with troubled youth and their families in Houston County.
The Alfred Saliba Family Services Center will use the grant for Why Try, a program for juveniles who have shown problematic behavior or committed a first offense with the juvenile court system. The program helps participants stay drug-free and improve their academic performance, behavior and self-esteem.
Why Try builds on the strengths of each participant, helping them focus on future goals and the steps they must take to achieve them. Why Try works in conjunction with the center’s Parent Project, a 10-week program that provides support for parents of out-of-control adolescents.
The Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs is administering the grant from funds made available to the state by the U.S. Department of Justice. ADECA manages a wide array of programs that support law enforcement and traffic safety, workforce development, energy conservation, water resource management, economic development and recreation.
Bentley notified Linda O’Connell, the center’s executive director, that the grant had been approved.
