MONTGOMERY – Gov. Robert Bentley has awarded an $85,500 grant to the Escambia County Commission to support a specialized law enforcement unit that serves domestic violence victims.
The grant will help the county’s Domestic Violence Crime Unit, established by the Sheriff’s Office and District Attorney’s Office, to investigate and prosecute domestic violence cases and assist victims.
“Domestic violence is a senseless crime that takes a physical and emotional toll on victims and families,” said Bentley. “I commend this unit for helping victims find justice.”
The unit employs a full-time prosecutor, two investigators and a court advocate who helps victims navigate the criminal justice system. The staff works closely with other law enforcement agencies, health care providers and community organizations to coordinate services for victims.
The Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs is administering the grant from funds made available to the state by the U.S. Department of Justice. ADECA administers a wide range of programs that support law enforcement, workforce development, energy conservation, economic development, water resource management and recreation.
Bentley notified County Commission Chairman David Stokes that the grant had been approved. Matching funds of $28,500 will supplement the award.
