MONTGOMERY— A $49,928 grant announced by Gov. Robert Bentley will help students at Etowah High School in Attalla to develop computer and technology skills that will be valuable whether they seek advanced education or employment after graduation.
The grant will help the city school system purchase 118 computers for students to use in the classroom. School officials say computers are an important tool for the Advancing Attalla program in which teachers incorporate technology into daily lessons to help students learn new skills.
To purchase the equipment, the school system will combine the Appalachian Regional Commission grant with a $40,902 grant from U.S. Department of Education.
Congress established the ARC in 1965 as a supplemental grant program to raise the standard of living, improve the quality of life and promote economic development in the Appalachian mountain region. The region includes 37 Alabama counties.
The Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs administers the ARC program in Alabama along with a wide range of other programs that support law enforcement, economic development, workforce development, recreation, energy conservation and water resource management.
