An old Prattville neighborhood is getting a new examination thanks to a $39,200 grant awarded by Gov. Robert Bentley.
Funding from the Community Development Block Grant will enable the city to create a plan to revitalize the city’s College Heights area and a segment of Martin Luther King Jr. Drive. City officials say growth in the area has become stagnant.
“Planning grants help develop a guide for the revitalization of communities and neighborhoods,” Bentley said. “Much like a road map, plans help you chart the best course to a desired destination.”
Components of the plan will include a neighborhood assessment, land use and market study, a statement of community visions and goals, and a determination of infrastructure and capital improvement needs. The area’s 1,233 residents will have the opportunity to be involved in the process.
Bentley notified Mayor Bill Gillespie Jr. that funding had been approved. The city is providing $9,000 in local funding for the project.
The Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs is administering the award from funds made available to the state by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.
