Bentley awards grants to help prosecute gun crimes

MONTGOMERY – Gov. Robert Bentley has awarded $201,907 to help the state Attorney General’s Office increase firearm-related prosecutions.

The grants will help fund salaries for state prosecutors who work directly with federal authorities and local law enforcement officials to prosecute and reduce gun crime.

“We need to ensure that violent, criminal activity is prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law,” said Bentley. “I appreciate the efforts of the Attorney General’s Office and law enforcement officers across the state to arrest and prosecute those who commit gun crimes.”

The Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs is administering the grants from funds made available to the state by the U.S. Department of Justice. The funding is authorized by Project Safe Neighborhoods, a federal program that targets gun crime and gang activity.

In addition to law enforcement grants, ADECA administers a wide array of programs in energy conservation, economic development, workforce development, water resources and recreation development.

Bentley notified Attorney General Luther Strange that the grants had been approved.
