MONTGOMERY—Gov. Robert Bentley has awarded an additional grant in support of an organization that assists sexual assault victims in four east Alabama counties.
Rape Counselors of East Alabama will use the $10,000 grant to help provide services to victims in Chambers, Lee, Macon and Tallapoosa counties. Bentley previously awarded a $52,000 grant to the organization in November.
The organization provides a 24-hour crisis line, medical exams by nurses who are specially trained to handle sexual assault cases, and staff members to accompany victims to the hospital.
The Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs is administering the grant from funds made available by the U.S. Justice Department.
Bentley informed Steve Martin, president of the center’s board, that the grant had been approved.
In addition to grant funds, Rape Counselors depends on private donations to ensure a full range of free assistance remains available to victims.
