MONTGOMERY — April 6 is the deadline for the Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs to receive applications for the second round of grants geared toward improving the state’s inland ports.
Inland port authorities and other port managers can begin applying Friday, March 13 for a grant of up to $1.76 million to fund capital improvements, infrastructure refurbishing, non-routine maintenance and other projects designed to make inland ports more viable and improve economic development.
Gov. Kay Ivey awarded a total of $3.2 million to six inland port systems in February under the Alabama Inland Port Infrastructure Program. The program was established by the Alabama Legislature in 2019 to improve inland waterway accessibility for existing industries and to help land new industries. It is being administered through ADECA’s Energy Division.
An inland port is one that is located along one of Alabama inland waterways (rivers, lakes, canals, etc.) that provides an intermodal transportation hub.
Grants are expected to be awarded in the summer.
Specifics about the grant program are available at www.adeca.alabama.gov/inlandports.
ADECA administers a wide range of programs that support law enforcement, victim programs, economic development, water resource management, energy conservation and recreation.
