MONTGOMERY — Gov. Kay Ivey has awarded nearly $48,000 to provide equipment to two police departments in east Alabama.
Gov. Ivey awarded $24,000 to the Lafayette Police Department and $23,985 to the Jacksonville Police Department.
“We are fortunate in Alabama to have so many men and women who take pride in wearing a uniform and keeping our streets safe,” Gov. Ivey said. “I commend those law enforcement officers who sacrifice so much, and I am pleased to award these grants.”
The Lafayette Police Department will use the funds to purchase body cameras, protective vests and other miscellaneous items to replace worn equipment.
The Jacksonville Police Department will invest in Tasers which are used to temporarily incapacitate someone.
The grants were awarded from funds supplied to the state through the U.S. Department of Justice. The Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs is administering the grants.
“Gov. Ivey is so appreciative of the work of Alabama’s law enforcement agencies and the individual officers, deputies and others who wear a badge,” ADECA Director Kenneth Boswell said. “ADECA is pleased to join with the governor in supplying these funds.”
ADECA administers a wide range of programs that support law enforcement, victim programs, economic development, water resource management, energy conservation and recreation.
