MONTGOMERY— Gov. Kay Ivey has awarded an $82,831 grant to help the Alabama Department of Insurance’s Criminal Investigations Division purchase new equipment to aid in investigations.

The department will use funds to purchase a new FARO laser scanner, a laptop computer needed to run the scanner and training for six operators. The scanner can be used to render 3D models of crime scenes or accidents to help investigators verify information or find new evidence.

“Modern equipment can allow investigators to get more accurate pictures of accident and crime scenes so they can conduct more thorough investigations,” Gov. Ivey said. “I am pleased to assist the Department of Insurance in its efforts to enhance their ability with investigations throughout the state.”

The Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs is administering the grant from funds made available by the U.S. Department of Justice. ADECA manages a wide range of programs that support law enforcement, economic development, infrastructure upgrades, recreation, energy conservation, water resources management and career development.

“ADECA joins Gov. Ivey in support of the efforts of the Department of Insurance’s Criminal Investigations Unit as they work to help the people of Alabama every day,” ADECA Director Kenneth Boswell said. “This grant will provide necessary equipment to enhance their investigative capabilities.”

Gov. Ivey notified Jim Ridling, commissioner of the Department of Insurance, that the grant had been approved.
