MONTGOMERY— Gov. Kay Ivey has awarded grants to two nonprofit organizations to help victims of domestic violence and sexual assault in west Alabama navigate the criminal justice system.

A $43,000 grant to SAN Inc., better known as Turning Point, will help victims in Bibb, Fayette, Greene, Hale, Lamar, Marengo, Pickens, Sumter and Tuscaloosa counties. A $26,000 grant to SABRA (Selma and Blackbelt Regional Abuse) Sanctuary Inc. will serve victims in Dallas, Greene, Marengo, Perry, Sumter and Wilcox counties.

“Navigating the court system can feel complicated and daunting for victims of domestic abuse and sexual assault,” Gov. Ivey said. “I commend the staff members of these organizations for ensuring that victims get the help and guidance they need to stay safe and obtain the justice they deserve.”

The Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs is administering the grants from funds made available by the U.S. Department of Justice.

“Gov. Ivey is a strong advocate for victims of these crimes, and ADECA joins her in commending these two agencies for the important work they do to help victims in their communities,” ADECA Director Kenneth Boswell said.

The two grants will supplement previous awards from earlier this year, including a $292,944 grant for SABRA Sanctuary from May and a $476,855 grant to Turning Point from July.

Along with grants, the nonprofit agencies rely on local, private donations to ensure that free services remain available year-round.

ADECA administers a wide range of programs that support law enforcement, victim services, economic development, water resource management, energy conservation and recreation.
