MONTGOMERY— Gov. Kay Ivey has awarded grants totaling $278,425 to support county programs that assist domestic violence victims and prosecute offenders in five south-central Alabama counties.

“Domestic violence victims and their families deserve professional support to assist them in overcoming the trauma of abuse as well as advocates to help them pursue justice in the legal system,” Gov. Ivey said. “I commend the work of these organizations for helping those who need it most and for prosecuting those responsible for abuse.”

The Elmore County Commission is using a $154,500 grant to continue the operations of the 19th Circuit Domestic Violence Unit serving Autauga, Chilton and Elmore counties. The unit is a partnership of the Elmore County Sheriff’s Office, County Commission and District Attorney’s Office. It will continue partnerships established with other victim services organizations to further help victims and prosecute offenders. Matching funds of $51,500 will supplement the grant.

The Montgomery County Commission is using a $93,000 grant to assist the Montgomery County Violence Against Women Prosecution Unit of the District Attorney’s Office. The unit assists victims and prosecutes cases involving domestic violence, sexual assault, stalking and human trafficking. The unit also provides training and education classes for law enforcement officers and staff members of victims’ services agencies in Montgomery County. Local matching funds of $31,000 will supplement the grant.

With a $30,925 grant, the Crenshaw County Commission will assist the Crenshaw County Sheriff’s Department in its efforts to protect and educate victims of domestic violence while also arresting and prosecuting abusers. The Sheriff’s Department works through partnerships with its Domestic Violence Task Force, the Family Sunshine Center and the Coalition Against Domestic Violence to provide protection, assistance, education and counseling in Crenshaw County. Matching funds of $10,308 will supplement the grant.

The Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs is administering the grants from funds made available by the U.S. Department of Justice.

“Gov. Ivey and ADECA support the efforts of these counties to help those victimized by domestic violence,” ADECA Director Kenneth Boswell said. “The partnerships between ADECA and these organizations are key to ensuring those who have suffered from abuse have access to the support services they need and to ensure those responsible are held accountable for their actions.”

ADECA manages a wide range of programs that support law enforcement, economic development, infrastructure upgrades, recreation, energy conservation, water resource management, job training and career development.
