MONTGOMERY-Gov. Kay Ivey has awarded $218,374 to reduce domestic abuse and sexual violence and ensure violators are prosecuted.

The governor awarded grants to domestic violence crime units responsible for enforcement and investigations in Calhoun, Cleburne, Etowah and Talladega counties.

“Domestic violence and sexual abuse are horrendous crimes that can destroy lives,” Gov. Ivey said. “I commend our law enforcement officers who must confront these crimes and ensure that justice is done.”

The District Attorney’s Family Violence Unit in the 7th Judicial Circuit was awarded $47,722 to continue serving victims in Calhoun and Cleburne County.

The Etowah County Sheriff Office’s Domestic Violence Unit was awarded $105,581 to serve victims and investigate cases in that county.

The 29th Judicial Circuit Domestic Violence Crime Unit was awarded $65,071 to investigate domestic violence cases and prosecute offenders in Talladega County.

The Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs is administering the grants from funds made available to the state by the U.S. Department of Justice.

“Gov. Ivey and ADECA remain committed to providing the necessary resources to support our law enforcement officers and prosecutors who investigate and prosecute these crimes and assist victims,” ADECA Director Kenneth Boswell said.

ADECA administers a wide range of programs that support law enforcement, victim programs, economic development, water resource management, energy conservation and recreation.
