MONTGOMERY— Gov. Kay Ivey has awarded an $80,658 grant to support a nonprofit agency that provides legal assistance to low-income victims of abuse in nine counties.

Legal Services of Alabama will use grant funds for attorneys to represent low-income clients in domestic violence cases in Autauga, Bullock, Butler, Chilton, Crenshaw, Elmore, Lowndes, Montgomery and Pike counties. The attorneys aid victims and their families with legal barriers to economic and emotional independence from their abusers. They also help victims find safe shelter and assist with daily needs.

“All domestic violence victims deserve ready access to professional assistance,” Gov. Ivey said. “I commend the work of Legal Services of Alabama to help those who need legal assistance but may not have the means.”

The Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs is administering the grants from funds made available to the state by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Matching funds of $20,164 will supplement the grant.

“ADECA stands with Gov. Ivey in support of domestic violence victims who need and deserve access to professional services,” ADECA Director Kenneth Boswell said. “The partnership between Gov, Ivey, ADECA and organizations like Legal Services of Alabama helps ensure victims from all backgrounds will continue to have assistance when they need it.”

ADECA manages a wide array of programs that support law enforcement and traffic safety, energy conservation, water resource management, economic development and recreation.
