MONTGOMERY— A nonprofit organization based in Phenix City will establish a new program to educate the public about domestic violence with help from a $24,882 grant awarded by Gov. Kay Ivey.

The grant will help the Crisis Center of Russell County implement its Prevention Education and Outreach Supportive Services program. The program is designed to provide information and prevention education about relationship violence, sexual assault and stalking through presentations at schools and community events in Russell County.

“Our young people and communities should be taught how to recognize the signs of abuse so they might have a better chance of receiving help or preventing further abuse,” Gov. Ivey said. “I commend the Crisis Center of Russell County for expanding their efforts to educate residents from an early age about the dangers of physical and sexual abuse.”

In addition to education, the center also provides a 24-hour emergency hotline, counseling, transportation, clothing and other essential services to victims.

The Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs is administering the grant from funds made available through the Family Violence Prevention and Services Act, a program under the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Local matching funds of $6,220 will supplement the grant.

“ADECA joins Gov. Ivey in support of the work that organizations like Crisis Center of Russell County perform every day to assist and educate those who may be experiencing abusive situations,” ADECA Director Kenneth Boswell said.

ADECA administers a wide range of programs that support law enforcement, victims’ programs, economic development, water resource management, energy conservation and recreation.

Gov. Ivey notified Stephen Cooper, president of the center’s board, that the grant had been approved.
