MONTGOMERY— Gov. Kay Ivey has awarded a $745,548 grant to support a nonprofit agency that assists sexual assault victims in four central Alabama counties.

The grant will help Crisis Center Inc. to continue providing 24-hour medical exams, medical and legal advocacy, individual and group counseling, emergency transportation and other services to victims in Blount, Jefferson, Walker and St. Clair counties.

“Sexual assault victims deserve access to round-the-clock care like the assistance provided by Crisis Center,” Ivey said. “I commend the work of the staff and volunteers of Crisis Center who protect victims and help them begin the healing process.”

The Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs is administering the grant from funds made available by the U.S. Justice Department.

“ADECA joins Gov. Ivey in her efforts to ensure that all sexual assault victims in central Alabama have access to prompt, professional and thorough assistance,” ADECA Director Kenneth Boswell said.

ADECA administers an array of programs supporting law enforcement and traffic safety, economic development, energy conservation, water resource management and recreation development.

Ivey notified David Bernard, Crisis Center board president, that the grant had been approved. Local matching funds of $186,387 will supplement the grant.
