MONTGOMERY— Gov. Kay Ivey has awarded $113,070 in grants to upgrade law enforcement equipment at five police departments in northeast Alabama.

The towns of Douglas, Hollywood and Grant as well as the cities of Bridgeport and Boaz will each use grant funds to make the purchases. Each will also use grant funds to help establish an officer safety program within the individual departments.

“Police often work in highly stressful and dangerous situations thus they deserve access to the best possible equipment while in the line of duty,” Ivey said. “I am glad to assist the efforts of these law enforcement agencies as they work to enhance their abilities to better serve and protect our residents.”

Ivey awarded the following grants:

Douglas - $17,142 to purchase duty weapons with holsters, flashlights, body cams, tasers, and intoximeters, which are used to detect illicit drugs in a person’s system.

Hollywood - $23,998 to purchase duty weapons, radars, digital cameras and a Dräger drug test machine, which tests for illegal substances in oral fluids.

Grant - $23,933 to purchase radars, body cams, computers and ballistic vests.

Bridgeport - $23,999 to purchase duty weapons, ammunition and ballistic vests.

Boaz - $23,997 to purchase tasers, body cams, radars, radar trailer and an intoximeter.

The Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs is administering the grants from funds made available by the U.S. Department of Justice.

“ADECA joins Governor Ivey in supporting these police departments as they equip officers to perform their duties safely and effectively,” ADECA Director Kenneth Boswell said.

ADECA manages a wide range of programs that support law enforcement, economic development, infrastructure upgrades, recreation, energy conservation, water resources management and career development.
