MONTGOMERY – Gov. Kay Ivey has awarded a total of $63,734 to help three police departments in southwest Alabama upgrade their equipment and their ability to enforce traffic laws and protect the public.
Awarded grants were Excel, $24,000; Gilbertown, $15,992; and Spanish Fort, $23,742.
“Our officers do an excellent job of enforcing our laws in Alabama,” Ivey said. “I am pleased to provide these funds to help these police departments fulfill their needs.”
Gilbertown will use funds to purchase body and vehicle cameras and a computer. Spanish Fort will purchase cameras and computers. Excel will purchase needed equipment.
Law enforcement agencies are given flexibility in equipment purchases provided they are law-enforcement related. In addition to the above items, many law enforcement agencies use funds to purchase patrol vehicles, body protection armor and radios.
The Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs is administering the grants from funds made available by the U.S. Justice Department. ADECA has awarded numerous grants to law enforcement agencies across Alabama to purchase equipment that those local agencies deem essential to their needs.
“ADECA is proud to join with Gov. Ivey in helping police do their jobs more efficiently, effectively and safely,” ADECA Director Kenneth Boswell said.
ADECA administers an array of programs supporting law enforcement and traffic safety, economic development, energy conservation, water resource management and recreation development.
