MONTGOMERY— Gov. Kay Ivey has awarded two grants totaling $ 140,715 to support services that help children involved in the criminal justice system in Morgan County.

The Morgan County Child Advocacy Center will use a $124,215 grant to continue providing services like specialized investigative interviews, advocacy and counseling to child abuse victims and affected family members. The center provides the services in a child friendly environment. Local matching funds of $31,053 will supplement the grant. In addition to grants, the center depends on private donations to ensure a full range of services is available to victims.

The Morgan County System of Services will use $16,500 in grant funds to continue helping youth offenders avoid further involvement in the juvenile justice system. This community-based resource for the Morgan County juvenile court will focus on helping parents of truant children implement strategies to address parental responsibility as the root cause of truancy and to stop the potential progression into more serious offenses.

“Child victims deserve specialized assistance and advocacy tailored to their specific needs, and parents of wayward youth often need assistance in steering their children back on the path to success,” Ivey said. “I commend both organizations for working to make Morgan County a better place by offering this assistance.”

The Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs is administering the grants from funds made available by the U.S. Department of Justice. ADECA administers a wide range of programs that support law enforcement, economic development, infrastructure upgrades, recreation, energy conservation, water resource management, job training and career development.

“Gov. Ivey and I share a commitment to helping the youth of our state be free of abuse and to have the tools they need to succeed at school and at home,” ADECA Director Kenneth Boswell said. “ADECA has strong partnerships with the Morgan County Child Advocacy Center and the Morgan County System of Services that will help ensure assistance is always available to child abuse survivors and parents who are trying to help their children live a better life.”

Ivey notified Scott Anderson, Morgan County Child Advocacy Center board chairman, and Nate Allen, Morgan County System of Services chairman, that the grants had been approved.
