MONTGOMERY— Gov. Ivey has awarded $246,552 in grant funding to support two organizations that serve victims of domestic violence.
The Alabama Coalition Against Domestic Violence will use a $70,000 grant to implement their Economic Domestic Empowerment Project which works to assist victims with self-sufficiency after leaving abusive relationships. AshaKiran Inc. will use a $176,552 grant to increase awareness and access to domestic violence services for foreign-born and culturally diverse populations. AshaKiran operates a 24-hour crisis line and provides emergency services for victims.
“Domestic violence is a horrible crime that crosses all socioeconomic lines, but there is help available to victims 24/7,” Ivey said. “I commend the staff of these two organizations for the help they provide for people in need.”
The Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs is administering the grants from funds made available by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
“Gov. Ivey understands the important role that these organizations play in the lives of those who have been victims of domestic violence,” ADECA Director Kenneth Boswell said. “ADECA is pleased to assist with this grant funding.”
ADECA administers a wide range of programs that support law enforcement, economic development, water resource management, energy conservation and recreation.
Ivey notified Charles Whisenant, ACADV board president, and Chakravarthy Devarapalli, AshaKiran board chairman, that the grants had been approved.
