Governor Ivey announces grant for sewage upgrades in Notasulga

MONTGOMERY— Gov. Kay Ivey has announced a $100,000 grant to help the town of Notasulga alleviate a potential public health threat and provide basic infrastructure for residents.

The funds from the Appalachian Regional Commission will enable the town to provide sewer services to residents who currently rely on faulty private septic systems to dispose of their household waste. The ARC grant will be combined with a $250,000 Community Development Block Grant awarded by Ivey earlier in the year.

“The combination of these two grants will improve lives and make the town of Notasulga an even better place to call home,” Ivey said. “I commend local leaders for taking action to extend public sewer service, and I am pleased to play a role in these awards.”

The town plans to extend sewer lines from its municipal sewer system to serve more than 22 residences and several businesses along Alabama Highway 14. Notasulga officials say residents in the affected area are having to cope with sewage backups in their houses and raw sewage rising out of the ground because of faulty or poorly maintained private septic tank systems in poor soils.

The Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs administers both the ARC and CDBG programs in Alabama.

“The combination of CDBG and ARC funds enables communities to take on projects they otherwise could not afford,” ADECA Director Kenneth Boswell said. “I am pleased to join with Gov. Ivey and our federal and local partners to improve lives.”

ARC is an economic development agency of the federal government and 13 state governments. The agency’s mission is to innovate, partner, and invest to build community capacity and strengthen economic growth in Appalachia to help the region achieve socioeconomic parity with the nation. Thirty-seven counties in Alabama are part of the ARC region and eligible for funds.

ADECA manages a range of programs that support law enforcement, economic development, recreation, energy conservation and water resource management.
