MONTGOMERY— Gov. Kay Ivey has awarded two grants totaling $250,000 to curtail crime in five Black Belt counties.
A $200,000 grant will enable the Fourth Judicial Circuit Gang Task Force to continue its efforts to reduce gang-related crime in Bibb, Dallas, Hale, Perry and Wilcox counties.
The Dallas County Adult Court program will use a $50,000 grant to enable some offenders to avoid incarceration by enrolling in a corrections program which requires they remain drug free and commit no further offenses.
“The menace of gangs, drugs and crime is a threat to law-abiding citizens and our communities,” Ivey said. “It is my hope that these two programs will have a positive impact in these counties by reducing crime and turning lives around.”
The Alabama Department of Community Affairs is administering the grant from funds made available by the U.S. Department of Justice.
“Gov. Ivey realizes making communities safe requires a combined effort among many organizations with a focused goal,” ADECA Director Kenneth Boswell said. “ADECA is pleased to partner in this effort.”
The Dallas County Commission is administering both grants. Ivey notified Commission Chairman Kim Ballard that the grant had been approved.
ADECA administers an array of programs supporting law enforcement and traffic safety, economic development, energy conservation, water resource management and recreation development.
