MONTGOMERY-- Gov. Kay Ivey has awarded a $120,000 grant that will lead to a dozen new jobs in Carbon Hill while also improving public safety and paving the way for future commerce.
The city will use the Community Development Block Grant funds to install lighting at the intersection of Interstate 22 and Walker County Road 11 (Nauvoo Road) where a truck stop/travel center will locate in an existing building.
“Interstate 22 is steadily bringing new commerce and industry to northwest Alabama since its complete opening,” Ivey said. “I applaud this new business, and I am pleased to support its development with this grant. I look forward to more development along this valuable corridor between Birmingham and Memphis, Tennessee.”
The Rolling T Truck Stop will be a 24-hour business offering gas and diesel fuel and will include a convenience store, a short-order restaurant, an overnight area for trucks and shower and laundry facilities. The business, which will locate in an existing 12,000-square-foot building, will employ 12 people.
The Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs is administering the grant from funds made available by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.
“ADECA joins Gov. Ivey in celebrating this project and the potential it brings to Carbon Hill,” ADECA Director Kenneth Boswell said. “This interchange improvement opens the door for other businesses to locate in the area, creating additional job opportunities for residents in Walker County.”
In addition to the governor’s grant, $228,000 has been secured from other local and state resources for the project. Ivey notified Mayor Mark Chambers that the grant had been approved.
ADECA administers an array of programs supporting law enforcement and traffic safety, economic development, energy conservation, water resource management and recreation development.
